An Orthopantomogram x-ray (OPG x-ray) is a wide panoramic x-ray of the patient’s upper and lower jaw, and associated dentition from root to crown, in a single image.
The OPG x-ray is one of the crucial diagnosis tools used in dentistry and routine dental checkups and is especially helpful in the planning of orthodontic dental brace treatment, as it provides a full overview of the teeth, and highlights non-erupted and/or impacted teeth.
How does OPG X-ray work?
The working of the OPG x-ray is non-invasive and is based on the same principles as regular x-rays.
The scan procedure involves you resting your chin on a small chin resting in front of the x-ray machine and biting softly on a sterile mouthpiece while pressing your tongue against the hard palate. You will be asked to maintain maximum stillness during the scan to ensure clear images.
Prior to the scan, you will be asked to remove any eyeglasses, jewelry, hearing aids, and dentures you may be wearing. The scan procedure is swift and pain-free with zero side effects and is done within a few seconds.
When do you need an OPG x-ray?
The OPG x-ray helps dentists acquire a comprehensive understanding of a wide range of dental conditions.
OPG x-rays may be carried out to diagnose or monitor the following;
Cavities within the teeth
Fractures
A dislocated jaw or other jaw issues
Oral infections
Tumors and other disorders
Sinuses
Teeth impaction and wisdom teeth development
Orthodontic treatment planning
Benefits of OPG X-ray
OPGs are fast, easy, and convenient, especially for patients with limited jaw movement. They also utilize the lowest patient radiation dose of any x-ray, with no radiation left in your body once the OPG scan has been completed.
Not opting for an OPG can result in the progression of undiagnosed oral conditions – leading to more serious oral health consequences. OPG X-rays provide early detection and allow for timely treatment thus increasing your chances for a quick and successful recovery.
